Insulation displacement connection technology | Phoenix Contact

QUICKON fast connection technology features a space-saving rotary connection with patented insulation displacement contact. Simply insert the untreated conductor into the clamping chamber and swivel the orange actuating element. This swivel cuts the cable and contacts the conductor.

It is used to connect conductors quickly and without any pretreatment. Insulation displacement connection is suitable for cables with PVC and PE insulation. Other types of insulation are available on request.

Save time with the insulation displacement connection, because the conductor does not need to be prepared for connection.

Our portfolio includes PCB terminal blocks and PCB connectors with an actuating element (in a contrasting color) up to 1.5 mm² connection cross-section and PCB terminal blocks with finger-operable connection for data lines up to 0.34 mm².

M12 connectors with QUICKON insulation displacement connection provide the fastest connection for connectors designed for assembly. The connectors are equipped with an insulation displacement contact. With this connection method, untreated rigid or flexible conductors including insulation are positioned in the connector. When the compression nut on the connector is tightened, the contact displaces the conductor insulation and makes a spring-forced, vibration-resistant, and gas-tight contact with the conductor.

Industrial power distribution does not have to be time-consuming or complicated. The QPD installation system for capacities up to 690 V/40 A is proof of this. With the proven QUICKON IDC displacement connection, cables up to 5 x 6.0 mm² can be connected quickly and easily, without stripping or special tools.

The connection is designed for applications in which round and AS-Interface cables are to be connected efficiently on site. The connection can be disconnected at any time, and the components can be reused. Fast-connection technology automatically provides contact and strain relief when tightened. The quick and easy handling of the QUICKON fast connection means that connection time can be reduced by up to 80%.

RJ45 connectors with insulation displacement connection (IDC) technology can be assembled easily and safely in the field without special tools. The industrial-grade connectors are suitable for Ethernet and PROFINET applications. They are available for cable sizes from 26 to 23 AWG and for data rates up to 10 Gbps.

Contact inserts with insulation displacement connection for heavy connectors reduce connection time by up to 60%. The QUICKON connection is equipped with an IDC insulation displacement contact. With this connection method, an unprepared wire with insulation is positioned in front of the gap of the insulation displacement contact and then pushed into the blade gap by means of insulation displacement. In so doing, the wire insulation is severed and gas-tight contact is established between the wire and the contact. The connection force is independent of the user and completely reliable, provided the permissible conductor cross sections and connection conditions are observed.

IDC Connector Assemblies - Electro-Prep, Inc.

Insulation-displacement contact (IDC) connectors are electrical connectors that feature contacts with sharpened blades. This design allows the connector contacts to be forced through the wire insulation to achieve electrical contact with the wire conductor. This eliminates the need to strip the conductor insulation prior to connecting. At Electro-Prep, we offer a wide range of ribbon cables and IDC connectors in various gauges, pin sizes, and centerlines that can be customized to your unique specifications. We also provide several testing options to prove the quality and safety of our IDC assemblies.

What Are IDC Connectors?

IDC, also known as IPC (insulation piercing contact) connectors, are common electrical connectors designed to pierce through wire jackets to connect to the wire conductors of insulated cables. During the connection process, the IDC connector’s contacts are inserted through the wire insulation and into the wire conductor without stripping the insulation beforehand. A primary benefit of IDC connectors is that they offer a reliable and quick way of connecting to discrete wires and flat ribbon cables.

Some of the most common applications for IDC connectors include monitoring and access control systems, computer systems, and transportation components.

Advantages of Using IDC Connectors

IDC connectors have many advantages. For example, they are easy to handle and can be used without the need for special tools. They also do not require soldering. Other advantages include:

  • Reduced assembly costs. It is much faster to populate IDC connectors compared to other types of connectors. This speed reduces overall assembly costs.
  • Efficiency. Pre-stripping of the wire’s insulation is not required, and dozens of wires can be processed at once.
  • Reliable connections. IDC connectors often include strain relief mechanisms that clamp and hold the wire in place. This secure connection improves reliability and prevents damage from flexing and strain.
