What are the pros and cons for lead acid vs lithium batteries in a golf ...

It seems the lead acid batteries are being phased out. The lithium option can add $ to the cost. The lead batteries have worked fine for me. They have never ever ran down to affect performance and easily charge overnight. We had thought we might get a new one in the next few years but now I am wondering if we should do it before the battery change-over and the much higher new prices. This is just for use around the house which is never more than a couple of miles a day and usually under one mile. It is not used on any roads.

The advantages of Li ion are lighter weight and better energy density, and in my opinion they are easier to maintain. If lead acid batteries are left to sit in a partially discharged state they degrade in energy and power capacity, at least in my experience with car batteries.

But it sounds like you maintain them and they work for you, so there’s probably not any real advantage of Li ion for you.

Lead acid batteries must be kept fully charged all the time and held on a maintainer or they will lose capacity ~3% per day; if the battery is held in a less than full condition the cells will be irreparably sulfated which limits capacity and shortens lifetime. Lost electrolyte must be replaced with distilled water, so this is added maintenance not needed by Lithium. We had a big 400V bank in the lab that lasted over 30 years with proper care.

Lithium gives longer lifetimes by cycle life and age life if not kept fully charged all the time and operated between 80 to 20% State of Charge.

My friend, what you will find in virtually all areas is that manufacturers mysteriously reinvent the wheel ever 25 years or so. The goal is to sell something new to the public. Take electric cars for example. The technology absolutely sucks in every possible way. Does that stop them, no. They will try and coerce you into buying a big pile of crap.

To answer your question, there is nothing wrong with lead acid batteries. Don’t believe the hype.

The pro of lead acid battery packs are cheap.

Modern cell chemistries are almost better in every single way, including running costs because of lead acid’s large limitations.

A LifePO4 cell pack can be put right into place and easily give you 3x the capacity in the same size.

The Ultimate Guide to Lithium Batteries for Golf Carts

Golf carts have evolved tremendously over the years, and one of the key advancements driving this evolution is battery technology. At ARCH EV, we prioritize performance and sustainability, and lithium batteries are at the forefront of this revolution. Whether you're looking for a battery upgrade or exploring your options, this guide will help you understand the value of lithium batteries and why they're the best choice for your golf cart.

How Much Are Golf Cart Batteries?

The cost of golf cart batteries varies depending on the type and brand. While lead-acid batteries are typically cheaper, lithium batteries offer greater value over time due to their longevity and performance. On average:

  • Lead-acid batteries: $600 - $1,500
  • Lithium batteries: $1,500 - $3,000

Although lithium batteries have a higher upfront cost, their extended lifespan and reduced maintenance costs make them a smarter long-term investment. Additionally, many lithium battery providers offer warranties lasting up to 8-10 years, ensuring peace of mind and reliability.

Golf Cart Battery Replacement Cost

Replacing a golf cart battery is a significant investment. Lithium batteries last up to 10 years, compared to 3-5 years for lead-acid batteries, which means fewer replacements and more savings over time. Factoring in reduced maintenance, lithium batteries often have a lower lifetime cost. When budgeting for a replacement, it's essential to consider not just the purchase price but also the additional costs of maintenance, downtime, and energy efficiency. Over a decade, lithium batteries can save hundreds, if not thousands, in operational costs.

Used and Refurbished Golf Cart Batteries

If you're considering used or refurbished batteries, keep in mind that their lifespan and performance may be compromised. While they may seem cost-effective initially, they may not deliver the reliability or efficiency required for modern golf carts. Investing in a new lithium battery ensures consistent performance and peace of mind. Furthermore, used batteries may come without warranties, leaving you vulnerable to unexpected failures and additional replacement costs. For those who want to maximize their investment, a new lithium battery is always the better choice.

What About the Golf Cart Battery Charger Plug?

Switching to a lithium battery might require an updated charger or a compatible golf cart battery charger plug. However, many lithium batteries come with universal adapters or chargers, making the transition seamless. Always consult your battery provider to ensure compatibility. The good news is that modern lithium battery systems often include smart chargers that optimize charging time and battery health, further enhancing convenience and extending the battery’s lifespan.

Gas vs. Electric Golf Cart

For those deciding between gas and electric carts, electric golf carts powered by lithium batteries are the clear winners in terms of eco-friendliness, quiet operation, and low maintenance. Pairing your electric cart with a lithium battery maximizes these benefits. Unlike gas-powered carts, electric carts produce zero emissions, making them a sustainable choice for environmentally conscious users. Additionally, lithium batteries recharge quickly, minimizing downtime and ensuring your cart is always ready for use.

Lithium vs. Lithium-Ion: What’s the Difference?

The terms "lithium" and "lithium-ion" are often used interchangeably, but they aren’t the same. Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable and commonly used in golf carts and other applications. The term "lithium battery" often refers to non-rechargeable options, so be sure to confirm the type before purchasing. Lithium-ion batteries are specifically designed for repeated cycles of charging and discharging, making them ideal for high-usage applications like golf carts. Understanding this distinction ensures you invest in the right battery for your needs.
